9/11 GI Bill® Eligibility – Do You Qualify?

9-11 GI Bill9/11 is one of the bleakest chapters in American history that impacted so many of us. As a veteran, the GI Bill® was intended to make sure it would not be repeated. And that’s why Congress, led by the President, put into motion a plan to ease vets back into the fragile economy. When it comes to your education and training as a veteran, you may be eligible for a specific VA-administered program. There are various ways to apply your GI Bill®. From college courses to vocational, technical and on-the-job training programs, you can use the GI Bill® Comparison Tool to help you make the most of your decision. Click here to access the tool.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (USDVA) shares that if you have eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® and any other GI Bill® program, you must make an irrevocable election of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® before you can receive any benefits. The Post-9/11 GI Bill® has some differentiators that you may not find in other programs. This includes the Yellow Ribbon Program and transfer or entitlement options. There are also various approved types of training and assistance specifically under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®.

Some examples include:

  • National testing reimbursement
  • Tutorial assistance
  • Entrepreneurship training
  • Independent and distance learning
  • Licensing and certification reimbursement
  • Plus, many other benefits

For the approved programs, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® provides up to 36 months of education benefits. The USDVA additionally shares that if your release from active duty was before January 1, 2013, there is a 15-year time limitation for use of benefits.  For individuals whose last discharge date is on or after January 1, 2013, the time limitation has been removed. When it comes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, it is important to note that full tuition and fees are paid directly to the school for all public school in-state students and for those attending private or foreign schools, the fees are capped at the national maximum.
